Cahill Hurt

Trevor Cahill left Wednesday afternoon’s Miami/Arizona game after being hit in the side by a line drive.

Tweet of the Day

Via Hardball Talk, this great tweet about Dustin Ackley:

Some players can’t hit AAA pitching but can’t hit major league pitching. That’s unusual, as good minor league hitters should be decent major league hitters. Some players, like Andy Marte, can’t make the transition. Some scouts noticed Marte had a long swing, and that cost him against MLB pitchers. I don’t know if that’s true for Ackley. Dustin came to the plate 1215 times and ...

Chris Crash

Chris Davis continued his home run barrage Wednesday afternoon, hitting homerun 25 as the Orioles lead the Tigers 6-1 in the fifth inning. Davis is on a pace for 55 homers this season, putting him in spitting distance of the AL record of 61 set by Roger Maris in 1961. The Orioles are playing game 73, and through 73 Yankees games in 1961 Maris owned 27 homers. Given Davis’s career home run rate, the probability of him breaking the record is small, about 0.0001, or 1 in 10,000. A hot home run streak, however, could bring him into contention.

An Appel A Day

The Astros signed Mark Appel:

Terms were not disclosed Wednesday ahead of a news conference with Appel.

The 21-year-old Appel was 10-4 with four complete games and a 2.12 ERA as a senior this season. He had 130 strikeouts in 106 1/3 innings pitched and allowed opponents a .203 batting average.

Appel is an Astros fan who grew up in West Houston before moving to California at the age of 12.

“I talked to him and told him: ‘Welcome home,’” Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said on draft night. “It’s a kid’s dream to go first in the country, ...

Games of the Day

I suspect game one of the Dodgers/Yankees double header will be watched closely in far eastern Asia as Hyun-Jin Ryu of South Korea faces Hiroki Kuroda of Japan. The two countries are not exactly the best of friends, so there should be strong rooting interests on both sides. Ryu benefits from Dodger Stadium with a 1.88 ERA at home this season versus 4.10 on the road. The main reason comes from a higher walk rate, but his hits allowed go up as well. Former Dodgers pitcher Kuroda held batters to a .290 OBP since joining the ...

Bad Night

Craig Calcaterra notes Josh Hamilton‘s poor night at the plate on Tuesday:

For those of you who want a statistical measure of this badness, note that Hamilton’s Win Probability Added (WPA), which measures how much a player contributed to his team’s win or loss on a given day, was -.477. That means he, all by his lonesome, reduced the Angels’ chances of winning last night’s game by 47.7%.

On the bright side: only four more years to go on that contract after this one.

Last season, I worked on a batter game score in order to rank ...

More Machado Doubles

Manny Machado hit his 33rd double of the season Tuesday night, putting him almost halfway to Earl Webb‘s record of 67 in a season. The Orioles are nine games away from their halfway point. When Machado stood at 31 doubles Bill James did a seat of the pants calculation (subscription required) that gave Manny a 3% chance of Manny breaking the doubles record. That’s a bit high, but not out of bounds. Bill assumed that Manny would continue to hit doubles at a pace of .075 per at bat. I use plate appearances instead of at bats, and right ...

Wednesday Update

The Day by Day Database is up to date.

Double Homer

The Cubs hit two home runs off Adam Wainwright Tuesday night as they cruised to a 4-2 win over the Cardinals. Wainwright came into the game having allowed two home runs the entire season. He kept his control, however, walking none. He’s now walked nine in 110 innings.

Sox Sweep

The Red Sox limit the Rays to one run in each game as they sweep a double header and drop Tampa Bay seven games back in the AL East. The Rays managed to tie the second game at one in the top of the ninth, but Jonny Gomes homered in the bottom of the inning to win the game 3-1. Boston is now 15 games over .500 with the most wins in the American League.

Wil Myers went 1 for 7 in his first day in the majors.
