Stephen Strasburg throws seven shutout innings, leaves after 80 pitches

Stephen Strasburg was cruising along through seven shutout innings against the Marlins and looked ready to pitch into the eighth inning of a game for the first time in his career, but manager Davey Johnson decided to pull him after just 80 pitches. Washington was up 2-0, so it was hardly a blowout situation, but…

Nats reliever Christian Garcia to be shelved two more weeks

Via James Wagner: The initial word on Christian Garcia’s visit with a Baltimore-based hand specialist is that the right-hander will need two more weeks of rest before he can resume throwing. Garcia was scheduled to fly to Washington on Sunday to be evaluated by Ken Means, a hand specialist. He had originally hoped to play…

Fantasy Baseball 2013: 6 Players Whose New Positions Raise/Lower Their Value

Every year there are new players that move teams, move roles and thus their value. 2013 is no exception as both free agency, trades and everything in between help dictate fantasy value.

One of the most promising areas of the draft can be to find that late "sleeper" or situational player that can give you value that far outweighs their draft position. Oftentimes you must get a little luck with that choice, but the rewards are so much higher than other possibilities at that draft slot.

This piece is looking to find some of those players whose value has increased ...

NL Notes: Cubs, Bailey, Rolen, Braves, Nats Bullpen

Thirty-one years ago today, the Cubs and Phillies swapped shortstops with Ivan DeJesus heading to Philadelphia and Larry Bowa going to Chicago. The Cubs also acquired a 22-year-old prospect by the name of Ryne Sandberg. This prospect managed to be named the 1984 National League MVP, played 16 years, finished with a career slash line of .285/.344/.452, and was enshrined into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005. Let's take a look at the news and notes involving the Cubs and the rest of the Senior Circuit:

  • Cubs GM Jed Hoyer told Jim Bowden and Jim Duquette on ...

Rosenthal On Felix, Upton, Rangers, Nationals

The Mariners continue discussing an extension with Felix Hernandez, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. The sides aren’t close to a deal, and are now “dancing.” However, Seattle is at least considering a four-year, $100MM offer, according to Rosenthal. It’s not clear if the Mariners have offered a nine-figure deal to Hernandez, whose current contract expires at the end of the 2014 season. The 26-year-old Octagon client would presumably want a longer commitment, as Rosenthal points out. Here are more of Rosenthal’s notes from around MLB...

  • The Mariners’ willingness to add veterans approaching free agency suggests GM Jack ...

Players Avoiding Arbitration: Friday

Dozens of players will agree to terms with their respective teams today and avoid arbitration. We'll have detailed posts on the top earners around MLB, and we'll track more modest agreements -- those worth less than $4MM -- right here. MLBTR's Arbitration Tracker will have all of the details.

Teams had until 12pm CDT today to exchange filing numbers with their arbitration eligible players. Generally speaking the deadline creates lots of discussion and leads to early deals. Plus, for ‘file and trial’ teams this marks the final chance for negotiations in advance of a hearing. Here are the latest agreements ...

Rafael Soriano will be the Nationals’ closer

General manager Mike Rizzo left no doubt that Rafael Soriano will be the Nationals’ new closer after signing a two-year, $28 million deal, saying: “Suffice it to say, Raffy is here to pitch the ninth inning.” That means last year’s primary closer, Tyler Clippard, moves back into a setup role after saving 32 games, and…

Nationals sign Rafael Soriano to two-year, $28 million deal

Well, this certainly came out of nowhere. Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports that free agent reliever Rafael Soriano has agreed to a two-year, $28 million contract with the Nationals, who lose their first-round draft pick in order to sign him. Soriano was one of three remaining free agents with draft pick compensation attached. All…

Major League Baseball holding a charity auction for Stand Up to Cancer

Major League Baseball just announced something very cool: a charity auction to benefit the Stand Up to Cancer. The initiative was inspired by the numerous cases of public relations officials in the sport who have been diagnosed with cancer in recent years. The auction starts now and goes through Thursday December 6 at midnight and includes…

Quick Hits: Cardinals, Nationals, Rodriguez

Congratulations to Buster Posey and Fernando Rodney, who were named MLB.com’s comeback players of the year for their respective leagues. Rodney had a historic season, posting a 0.60 ERA and striking out more than a batter per inning in Tampa Bay. Posey had an MVP-caliber year after missing most of the 2011 season with a broken leg and damaged ankle ligaments. Here are today’s links...

  • The Cardinals, now just one win away from another World Series appearance, are doing just fine without Albert Pujols, Yahoo's Jeff Passan writes. St. Louis’ roster looks just as scary ...
