  • Right-hander Daniel Stange has opted out of his deal with the Padres' Triple-A affiliate, MLB.com's Corey Brock reports (via Twitter).  Stange last pitched in the majors in 2010, appearing in four games with the Diamondbacks, and has been in the minors with the D'Backs and Padres ever since.  Stange posted a 4.15 ERA, 9.9 K/9 and 5.5 BB/9 in 39 relief innings at Triple-A this season.

The Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies square off tonight at 7:05 PM at Citizen Bank Park in Philadelphia for a matchup against the second and third-placed teams in the National League East. 

Former Nationals pitcher John Lannan (0-1, 6.14 ERA) takes the mound for the Phillies in his first start since coming off the DL with a strained quad tendon in his left knee. Lannan goes up against Washington's Dan Haren (4-8, 5.70 ERA) in the series opener.

Nationals Sign Drew Ward

The Nationals have signed third-round pick Drew Ward to a deal worth $850K, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America (via Twitter).  The Oklahoma high schooler was set to attend Oklahoma University, but the allure of joining the Nats' system coupled with the lucrative deal was apparently too much to resist.

Should Bryce Harper Have Spoken Up About the DL After He Hit the Wall?

Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper crashed into the left field wall at Dodger Stadium on May 13 after chasing down a fly ball off the bat of Los Angeles Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis. With blood streaking down the young outfielder's neck, he was removed from the game.

Harper hit the wall exceptionally hard. So hard, in fact, that Denard Span needed to rush over from center field to pick up the ball as Harper lay there on his back. The cut on his chin was so severe that he needed 11 stitches.
